Mighty Mike is an old-school muscle man – with a 1920s red and white striped weightlifter jumpsuit. He’s got a trick tool of making kids feel strong, making kids feel strong, strangers to stop and pay attention – and most importantly to make his audience feel good. The Butterfly Exhibit at the New York State FairTeri Weaver | [email protected]

The butterfly exhibition

Where: Horticultural building

How much: $3 for one person, $6 for two, $2 for each additional person

When: Every day during the fair

why it’s awesome: It’s just magical to stand in a room with orange, black, purple, red and blue butterflies floating around. It’s also a great way to people watch. Some children (and adults) start out shy, scared of floating and crawling pollinators. But after a few minutes, even the most insect-averse can’t resist trying to get a butterfly to drink from a sugar-coated cotton swab. Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends. “There’s one on your glasses,” a woman told me. “What should I do?” I say, afraid to move. “Enjoy it,” she replied.
